As a synthetic food dye, this means that it doesn’t occur anywhere in nature and needs to be created through man-made processes. It is made synthetically from petroleum, not animal products. 

Yellow 5 food dye is also known as tartrazine. Tartrazine is an organic sodium salt which is the trisodium salt of tartrazine acid. A synthetic lemon yellow azo dye used as a food colouring. This dye is supplied in the form of orange-red crystals. Its common name is sunset yellow FCF and its molecular formula is C16H10N2Na2O7S2.
